Development in Okinawa

In the 17th century, the Japanese Satsuma clan invaded Okinawa and imposed a weapons ban on the people. To defend themselves, Okinawans refined their unarmed combat techniques. This led to the development of different styles of “Te,” which incorporated elements of Chinese martial arts. Over time, these techniques evolved into what is now known as karate.

The Influence of Chinese Martial Arts

During the 18th and 19th centuries, many Okinawan martial artists traveled to China to learn various fighting techniques. They studied different styles, such as Shaolin Kung Fu, and integrated them into their own practice. This influence helped shape karate into a more structured and effective martial art.

Modernization of Karate

By the early 20th century, karate started to gain recognition beyond Okinawa. A master named Gichin Funakoshi played a key role in introducing karate to mainland Japan. In 1922, he demonstrated karate in Tokyo, which impressed many people. Funakoshi helped establish the first formal schools, or “dojos,” where students could train systematically.
